Summer Travel Tips

ummer Travel - things to know before you go!

Summer is the time many of us will be travelling, either abroad or in the States. Here are a few tips I think will help you to enjoy your summer journey.

1. Plan ahead - Most airlines have a crazy price structure that includes a 21 day advance purchase as well as day and even time restrictions for the lowest price tickets. Your travel agent can help you determine the best time to get the best fare for your itinerary.

2. Know what documents are required -

Be sure to have the correct documents for your destination. At the very least a picture ID such as drivers license is required. Use the exact same name as your drivers license ID. An 83 year old lady was almost rejected at Sarasota-Bradenton Airport as as she had used “Betty” instead of “Elizabeth” on her ticket.

For international travel a passport and sometimes a visa is required. Make sure yours is current. It can take 4 to 6 weeks for a new one.

3. Confirm your flight - Schedules change continually and flights are cancelled. The airlines should contact you but in the case of some internet bookings you will not be called. Ultimately, you are responsible for calling and confirming all flights. Always give a contact phone number so they can call you with any changes.

4. Pack light - the age old rule is to put everything that you will be taking on your bed. Take half of the clothes and twice the money. Follow a color scheme so you can mix and match clothes and therefore increase your wardrobe. Make sure that sharp objects are packed in your check-in bags.

If you are not checking bags then make sure you leave those items at home. If you get cold easily, carry a sweater with you on the plane. You are also permitted to carry on a snack. Take something that is easy and not messy if you are on a lengthy flight.

5. Arrive on time - with today's increased security, simply getting to the gate is a challenge. Allow for enough time to arrive at the gate 20 minutes prior to

boarding. You may have prepared properly but there will always bethat one person ahead of you that keeps everyone else waiting while they search for tickets, ID, etc.

6. Be prepared for delays - summer weather is unpredictable at best. Have confirmation numbers and phone numbers with you just in case you need to make a change. Better yet, if you use a travel agent, call them and they will alert car rentals, hotels, and any others that you will be arriving late.

7. This is a vacation - Relax, enjoy yourself, and remember people and places are not going to be the same as "home". Experience the joy of learning and doing new things.
